Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is, together with Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, one of the so-called sister islands of Bali. With its 200 square kilometers area  it's also the largest of these three

The island has been a household name with recreational divers and snorkelers for many years because of the beautiful coral reefs and unique fauna around the island. In particular, the large Manta rays and Mola Mola (sunfish) attract many tourists to the island every year.

For several years, regular tourism has also increased tremendously on the island itself. This is mainly due to the many breathtakingly beautiful spots such as Diamond Beach, Crystal Bay and Kelingking Beach, which are becoming increasingly popular by many young adventurers. The recent construction of ports has further widened the demographic

With its 50,000 inhabitants, the island is fairly sparsely populated, you will not find busy cities full of scooter traffic or large resorts here. It also breathes   with its many temples and colored ceremonies, the atmosphere of Bali. It is therefore affectionately referred to by some as 'Bali as it used to be'.

Unfortunately, due to increased tourism and increased consumption on the island, the waste problem has also increased. The government-funded waste processor can only cover a small portion of the island, and the collected waste ends up on a rapidly expanding landfill.

Furthermore, most villages and hotels do not have access to this service because the number of waste processor vehicles is limited and their size is unsuitable for the poor infrastructure. The result is that a lot of waste is still burned in the open air or worse, dumped in environment or the ocean.
