Clean Penida
Nusa Penida is one of Bali's beautiful sister islands. Marine animals such as the large manta rays and the Mola Mola angelfish make the island a favorite destination for divers. The breathtakingly beautiful places on the island itself are now also being discovered by regular tourists. Not only is the number of hotels increasing rapidly, but also the amount of waste, which, in the form of litter to complete dump sites, is becoming an increasing problem.
In April 2020, together with 2 local entrepreneurs, we decided to set up the CleanPenida foundation to tackle this problem. A program that focuses on collection, processing, recycling, and education.
We started energetically, in May 2020 we started with the foundation of the sheltered workshop with office. At the end of July, the construction was finished and we were fully operational, . We also started setting up 'Bank Sampah' (waste bank) collection points and the cooperation with the local authorities and the population went smoothly.
The ongoing corona crisis and a flood in December 2021, in which our pick-up truck was lost, significantly disrupted our operations. Due to the extra costs for renting transport, we could no longer operate cost-effectively and private financing started to dry up. As a result, our growth stagnated and until this day we are struggling to survive. Nevertheless, we remain optimistic that we can bring this project to full self-sufficiency within a few years However, to achieve this we need your support to achieve that.
